Art
From the National Curriculum:
" Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.."
At St. George’s, we aim to:
- provide fun, creative learning experiences, which encourage children to become more confident learners.
- give children the freedom to document things in their sketchbook in their own way
- enable children to learn the language of art and design as soon as children learn to read and write in Reception
- regularly expose children to Art and Design and give them the opportunity to form meaningful responses
- teach children about great artists from around the world and the impact they have had, and the historical and cultural development of their designs
- create cultural awareness, whilst recognising and valuing similarities with, and differences between, other cultures and languages.
- create cross-curricular learning opportunities, where possible and appropriate.
- to ensure that lesson content is accessible to all learners
The children are introduced to Art and Design under the umbrella of the Early Years Foundation Stage in Reception where they have the opportunity to create with materials and become imaginative and expressive learners, sharing their creations and explaining the processes that they have used. In KS1 and KS2 Art and Design is taught through termly units encompassing drawing, paint, pattern, 3D sculpture and clay, alongside focus artists.
We aim to provide an annual Purbeck Art’s Week experience for our children, and have previously welcomed artists and sculptors, as well as a TV director and fashion designer.
